[2025] Parent-child event | Is it too early for children to use knives? "Safe knife experience" in Asakusa | Held in July 2025

My name is Okudaira, and I am the owner of Japan Knife TOKU Knives.
We personally inspect and select knives made by artisans from all over the country, focusing on knives from our local area of Sakai, Osaka, and deliver the finest selection of knives to you.

"My child has started to show an interest in cooking, but I'm still not sure how to let him hold a knife..."
In response to such requests from parents, the knife specialty store "Japan Knife TOKU" will be holding a "First Knife Experience Event" in which parents and children can participate together.
Please join us and learn how to use knives safely, enjoyably and correctly.

## Are you afraid to let your child use knives?

I don't want my child to get hurt. I don't want them to do anything dangerous. I'm sure there are mothers out there who feel the same way.
Why do we think it is dangerous and risky to let children hold knives?
I'm sure that's because they don't or can't teach people how to use it correctly.
First of all, were we adults ever taught how to use knives properly?
As far as I can remember, I was taught things like "make a fist with your left hand when cutting" in home economics class in elementary school, but I don't remember being properly taught how to hold or move a knife.

## Even adults don't know how to use knives properly

At "Japan Knife TOKU", we hold a knife sharpening course.
During the course, we check the sharpness of the sharpened knives, but most people are unable to move the knife correctly. They move the knife up and down, which makes it impossible to cut the newspaper they are trying to test. When we explain that "you need to move the knife back and forth, not up and down, to cut the newspaper," they are surprised at how sharp it is, and they cut cleanly.
That's right. Even adults don't know how to use knives properly.

## What is the “First Knife Learning Experience for Parents and Children”?

In this first knife experience that parents and children can learn together, we hope that children who have become interested in watching their mother cook will learn how to use knives correctly.
It comes with a character knife and cutting board to get your child interested in cooking.
The knife we will be using this time is a "child's knife," a knife with a rounded tip designed for use by children in the lower grades of elementary school.
We have students use this knife to cut vegetables and fruit, and then have parents and children eat them together.
The key point is to teach you how to use a knife to cut vegetables and fruits.

### To help parents and children enjoy cooking together

If you can get your child interested in cooking, cooking time at home will surely be fun.
If the knives you use in cooking are sharp, the food you eat with them will also taste even better.
Japan Knife TOKU does not simply sell knives, but by resharpening knives, they hope to let people know what makes a knife sharp. Through this event, they hope to provide an opportunity for people to experience the joy of cooking and how to fillet fish, as well as experience techniques and culture.

### What Sakaitoku Knives Aims for
